Letter to William M. Bailey [manuscript] 1833 April 11.

Jacob Bailey writes to his brother describing his move to Bellona Arsenal, Va. He mentions setting out from Charleston, S.C. and traveling by rail to Augusta, Ga. where he visited friends from Providence [R.I.]. Bailey describes a visit to the nearby U.S. arsenal, where he "found that arrangements had been made to burn up the Arsenal in case the 'nullies' should make an attack upon it." From Augusta, Bailey traveled through Columbia, Camden, and Cheraw, S.C. to Fayetteville, N.C. and thence to Raleigh, N.C. and "during all this route I saw little besides 'piny [sic] woods' and nearly naked negroes." Bailey went from Raleigh to Petersburg, Va. "over the vilest road that I ever suffered torture from" and finally arrived in Richmond, Va. eight days after leaving Charleston. He mentions that he lost his travel notes; that he sent his brother a box of shells from Charleston; briefly discusses their joint business; and, discusses an unidentified woman. Bailely concludes with a brief description of Bellona Arsenal, which is "about 10 or 15 miles from Richmond ... close to the bank of the James River, and is in the heart of the coal district." He hopes to have little to do and "plenty of leisure to botanize." He concludes by saying how glad he is to be away from the sand flies, ticks, and mosquitoes on Sullivan's Island and says he hopes he will be able to "entertain you with a description of a descent into a coal mine" in another letter.
